Cristian Zuzunaga has created a colourful cushion collection for Kvadrat, entitled Squaring of the Circle. The collection consists of three designs, named Spirit, Soul and Fire, which are all constructed from pixels – the designer’s trademark pattern.

Individuality is at the heart of the collection: each cushion will be unique thanks to the repeat of the printed fabric. In addition, Squaring of the Circle offers individual, vibrant and unique combinations of colours, which range from  bright and energetic to soft and gentle.

The colourful character of the collection reflects Cristian Zuzunaga’s mission to provoke positive emotions and sensations by introducing colour to daily life.

The cushions, which are made from Trevira CS and can be washed at 40C, also stand out for their attention to detail. For instance, colours run smoothly over the cushions’ seams, ensuring the rhythm of the pattern is not disturbed.

Like much of the designer’s work, Squaring of the Circle is inspired by architecture. ‘My patterns derive from zooming in on images I have taken of cityscapes, until the image is broken down into its infinitesimal geometric shapes. My designs are a metaphor for our cities, illustrating the way in which they can only exist as a result of endless combinations of individual characters’ says Cristian Zuzunaga.

Since discovering letterpress printing as a student – and its virtually infinite links with architecture and digital technology – the designer has exclusively worked with geometric shapes, most notably pixels. This gives his work, including this collection, a very strong visual narrative.

Cristian Zuzunaga’s versatile work bridges fashion and interiors. A firm fan of collaboration, he has worked with clients including Kvadrat, Ligne Roset, Christophe Delcourt, Tate Gallery, Nanimarquina and Hästens.

His designs are regularly published and have been exhibited in galleries and trade shows across the world.

Cristian Zuzunaga and Kvadrat collaborate

By Jamie Mitchell for FX Magazine

Cristian Zuzunaga at the London Design Festival

I kicked off my tour of the London Design Festival this morning with a visit to Danish textile company Kvadrat's London showroom. The space, designed by architect David Adjaye and designer Peter Saville, is worthy of a blog entry of its own, but I went there to see some brilliant new work by Barcelona-born graphic and print designer Cristian Zuzunaga, who has created a collection of curtains for Kvadrat using bold architectural shapes. The two designs, Skyline and Cityscape, feature multiple overlapping layers, which reveal subtle shapes and unexpected colours. He has also designed a colourful cushion collection for Kvadrat called Squaring of the Circle.

Originally a student of typography and graphic design, Zuzunaga's creative epiphany came when he discovered the tactile and imperfect qualities of letterpress printing and he was inspired to work with textiles after a trip to Shanghai to research ultra-modern architecture. Zuzunaga's recent work takes photography - usually pictures of cityscapes - as its starting point. He then renders them in pixels and uses them to create artworks and fabric patterns. 'My patterns derive from zooming in on images I have taken of cityscapes until the image is broken down into infinitesimal geometric shapes,' says the designer, who describes his work as 'a metaphor for our cities, illustrating the ways in which they can only exist as a result of endless combinations of individual characters'.

A big fan of collaboration, Zuzunaga has also teamed up with multimedia designers Digital Tea, who have used his designs to create an interactive installation at the Kvadrat showroom.

Urban Fabric at LDF

By Gian Luca Amadei for Blueprint Magazine

Urban Fabric at LDF

Skylines encapsulate the essence and identity of cities. Especially at dusk, when the composite layering of buildings is partially reduced to bi-dimensional silhouettes against the sky. This is what Spanish designer Cristian Zuzunaga captures in his latest collection of curtain fabrics for Danish textile company Kvadrat. Zuzunaga recalls that the inspiration for his project came to him after a visit to Shanghai, while researching his MA thesis. Whilst there, he realised what an overwhelming effect the super-modern architecture had on the densely populated Chinese city and especially how facades of buildings are hidden under digital billboards, turning them into vast advertising and communication devices.

Urban Fabric at LDF

For the London Design Festival, Zuzunaga collaborated with creative studio Digital Tea, to create a site-specific interactive video installation that can be seen at Kvadrat’s East End showroom. Descending the wooden staircases, the main architectural feature in the showroom, the visitor is confronted by a video projection that despite its visual nature has a sound like quality obtained by the syncopated sequence of images. The base used for the video sequences is Cityscape a geometrical design by Zuzunaga. The visual rhythm created by the patterns and its use of colours, brings to mind the avant-garde rigor of the Bauhaus and the minimalism of Russian Suprematism. Part of the new collection also unveiled at Kvadrat is Squaring the Circle, a clever yet playful collection of cushions by Zuzunaga featuring a distinctive pixilated fabric, which it has recently become the designer’s signature.
